Considerations for Getting Your Next Garage Door

Posted on: 11 January 2021

Do you have a garage door that is beyond repair and needs to be replaced? If so, there are a few things that you need to know about installing a new residential garage door before you move forward.

Material Considerations

The first thing that you'll need to decide on is the material of the new garage door itself. With there being many options available to you, it may feel a bit overwhelming. Some of the most popular garage door materials include wood, steel, and aluminum, and all three have their own benefits when being used for a garage door.

Of all three materials, you'll find that steel is going to have the most durability of them all. If you select steel, there should not be any concerns about the garage door itself being damaged from the weather and having to prematurely replace the door from damage. An aluminum garage door is an affordable option and will have an easier installation due to the door being lighter and easier to handle. Wood is a more traditional material that is commonly used for its style, with the door lacking in terms of insulation and durability.

Insulation Considerations

You will have the option to insulate your garage door or leave the material as it is at the time of the installation. You may not realize how beneficial it can be to add more insulation to a garage door. Having additional installation on the door can help your garage stay much cooler in the summer, and warmer in the winter, which can translate to the temperatures in your home if you have an attached garage. If you have items in your garage that you would like to protect from temperature fluctuations, adding insulation to the door can help keep the temperature from reaching extremes.

Installation Considerations

While a garage door installation is something that you can have done on your own, you should consider hiring a professional to do this job for you. There are some safety concerns when you install a new garage door, and it may not be worth the risk to handle the installation on your own if you have never done it before. For example, the springs need to be installed with a lot of pressure being put on them, and if done incorrectly the spring could come snapping back towards you. It may not be worth the risk to mess with dangerous elements of installing a garage door.
